GEORGE LUPO
To study art and be an artist was something I passionately desired and held on to for a very long time starting from when I was very young. With this desire, as entered my late teens, I acquired the yearning to be on my own, leave Brooklyn and see the world. Graduating from the State University of New York Maritime College at Fort Schuyler in the Bronx, and then going to sea as an officer on
American cargo ships fit well in my plan. After going to sea almost continually for four years, and after some consideration, I decided to leave New York to enroll at Arizona State University in Tempe to pursue my passion for art.
I hold two undergraduate degrees: a Bachelor of Science in meteorology and oceanography, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and drawing. I was in the Masters program at ASU in painting for a while. I also attended Art Center College of Design in Pasadena for photography for a year.
Over the years, I have involved myself in several art forms: photography, music, and writing. However, for the past twenty-five years I have been seriously concentrating on painting.
Most of my paintings are large abstract pieces. However, occasionally, I paint the figure perhaps to revive my skill at rendering or perhaps to inject my ego with the proof that I am a talented artist. I can’t say if any of this is true. But I do enjoy painting the figure no matter what the reason.I see my abstract work as an intuitive dance between intention and spontaneity, an extension of abstract expressionism. Color plays a pivotal role in my work.
Vibrant and bold hues infuse my paintings with energy, hopefully drawing the viewer into a world of exploration and emotion. Also, underpainting serves as a fundamental aspect of my artistic technique. Through the layering of colors beneath the surface, my hope is to create a dynamic interplay between different hues that infuse my paintings with an inherent sense of depth and complexity.
I have been in numerous shows and exhibitions in all the states I lived in: New York, Arizona, Washington State, Maryland and Florida.
