From a young age, I was captivated by drawing and creation. My parents preserved the drawings I made when I was just four years old. At 21, I opened my first studio in Bermuda, a lonely island in the middle of the Atlantic, far from my birthplace in Borneo, Kalimantan, Indonesia—a land once known for its headhunters and orangutans.
In my studio, I experimented with various mediums: watercolors, acrylics, collages, and printing, ultimately finding my passion in oil painting. I loved the vibrant, alive quality of the paint and the distinctive aroma that filled the space. My journey has taken me through Curaçao, the Netherlands, Canada, St. Maarten, and Germany, and now I find myself in Boca Raton, where I have my current studio.
I studied fine arts (BFA) at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto and have participated in over 20 national and international exhibitions, with my work included in private collections. With over a decade of experience in both private and public education as a teacher and administrator in Canada and the U.S., I’ve seen how art can inspire and educate.
In my early twenties, my style gravitated toward surrealism, which I continue to explore alongside moments of abstraction to keep things fresh. I view my work as an exploratory journey through my subconscious, expressing those discoveries on canvas in an abstract surreal style. I've never felt the need to adapt my art to fit trends or what might sell; my passion lies in creating what speaks to me.
I believe that surrealism, like many artistic movements, will experience a resurgence. Though I feel I’ve aged like an old oak tree, I’m continually reminded that the more I learn, the less I truly know. Each time I step into my studio, enveloped by the scent of oil paint, I’m filled with a renewed motivation to create—as if life is just beginning. Art fuels my desire to explore, making me feel as though the journey will never end.
